The epic adventure of Nhamo the Manyika Warrior
The epic adventure of Nhamo the Manyika Warrior written by Denton Chikura.
Lucian Msamati (the No 1 Ladies Dectective) directs a superb company which includes Tanya Fear (Kick Ass 2), Don Gilet (Eastenders, Babyfather), Nyasha Hateni (The Ghost and Ery Nzaramba (The Snow Queen) as Nhamo.
Don Gilet’s fast-talking Narrator has been given 24 hours to come up with the ultimate African fable (he’s sold the rights already to ITV as a daytime soap) and turns to the Ancestors for help. They send him Nhamo (Ery Nzaramba), who would rather dip his goats than be cast as a hero; but he’s soon swayed when he learns Chipo (Tanya Fear) will be his love interest. Their intended romance is derailed, however, by the bombastic Specimen, whose prior claim on Chipo is explained in flashbacks. The four performers are wonderfully silly while name-checking black stereo types in film and TV.
The clever twist to this play is that it looks at the way cultural identity has changed in Britian and Africa. Audience participation is actively encouraged – and it’s so good-humouredly silly its hard to resist.
