A winter lights festival at Eastbury Manor House

Following the successful promenade production of Merchant of Venice, Barking and Dagenham will once again be illuminated with GLOW, a winter lights festival at Eastbury Manor House. The event in Barking, east London takes place on Friday 25 and Saturday 26 November between 5.00pm and 8.30pm.

GLOW is a magical winter experience for all the family featuring light installations set in beautiful surroundings. Audiences will see illuminated artworks presented by 20 talented artists. The spectacle will feature lights integrated and intertwined across the gardens, trees and interiors of the auspicious Eastbury Manor House. The work will show an illumination of shapes and movement, created by established local, national and international artists. Over the two days there will also be workshops, stalls with delicious refreshments, a DJ and interactive activities for everyone.

Eastbury Manor House is a striking Elizabethan merchant's house completed by 1573. This Tudor brick built gentry house with turrets and an enchanting walled garden is a National Trust gem.

Of the artists commissioned Pa-Boom will create a fire garden within the walled gardens of the site. This will see fire integrated with sculpture in a variety of ways to create installations for audiences to walk through and interact with. Pa Boom will also deliver a number of workshops in the lead up to the event.

Susie Olczak will be uplighting the façade of the building using contemporary patterns which reference patterns from the Tudor period having taken inspiration from Eastbury Manor House itself.

Jana Matejkova will develop her Wish Commet  light and sound installation which has been created by lighting thousands of interconnected festival wrist bands.

Ian Wolter will premier Orrey, a working model of the solar system which will include different sized, illuminated beach balls. This will represent a spinning, orbiting sun with a diameter of almost 10m; planets will orbit the sun, and moons orbit the planets high in the air.

Helen Ball, Engagement Director, Creative Barking & Dagenham said ‘We are so excited to be working with local residents, artists, staff at the house and the national trust in this project to transform Eastbury Manor House for the GLOW festival.  Our festivals are all about creating great arts events in locations in Barking and Dagenham that are brilliant but not always well known.  Eastbury is an absolute gem and we can't wait for the event.’
